Fairy tales have been the inspiration for musical compositions across the ages, from Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel and Offenbach’s Tales of Hoffman to Ravel’s Mother Goose Suite as narrated by Stephen Russell, from the Stratford Festival Company. In addition to these delightful selections, the SSO begins its 15th season featuring Katy Clark and Leanne Kaufman from the Canadian Opera Company.

2019: Lord Chamberlain in Henry VIII and understudy in Birds of a Kind. 36th season. Stratford: Gaunt (Breath of Kings: Rebellion), Silence (Breath of Kings: Redemption), Helicanus (The Adventures of Pericles), Doc (West Side Story), Slim (Of Mice and Men), Mr. Brownlow (Oliver!), Chorus Leader (Oedipus Rex), Cornwall (King Lear) at the Lincoln Center in New York and the title roles in Julius Caesar, Richard II and Henry VI. Elsewhere: He has appeared in theatres across Canada, most recently as Alex Priest in Heisenberg at the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre (2018). Film/TV: His most recent film project is the part of Pontius Pilate in The Gospel of John. Et cetera: He lives in Stratford with Astrid.

Soprano and London native Katy Clark lives in Toronto, where she is working on her DMA in Voice Performance at the University of Toronto under the tutelage of Nathalie Paulin. Katy was a recipient of the 2017-2018 Rebanks Family Fellowship and International Performance Residency at the Royal Conservatory, and has sung with with the Amici Chamber Ensemble, the Canadian Opera Company Chorus, Shoestring Opera, The Elora Singers, and the 8-voice a-capella ensemble Opus 8. She has won prizes in the Harold Haugh Light Opera Competition, The Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, and the Sheila and Marla Zack Competition.

Katy's favourite roles include Cunegonde in Candide, The Queen of the Night in Die Zauberflöte, and Despina in Cosí fan Tutte. The founder and producer of London’s Village Opera, Katy recently sang in their productions of The Great Lakes Suite… and Other Canadian Adventures,and the food-themed program Bon Appétit! Next up, she will be singing with the Amici Chamber Ensemble on the Convivencia concert in November, and with the Windsor Symphony Orchestra as the soprano soloist in The Messiah in December. Katy is very excited to be singing so close to home with the wonderful SSO!


Leanne Kaufman is a Toronto-based soprano, originally from Calgary. She is a recent graduate of the University of Toronto Opera Division (MMus 2018). Performances with UofT Opera included: Donna Anna (Don Giovanni), Rhoda Rosenstein (Gershwin's Of Thee I Sing) and Vénus (Orphée aux Enfers). Other recent engagements include: Donna Anna at the Westben Festival and Music Niagara, and Musetta (La bohème) with Highlands Opera Studio. In the 2018-2019 season, Leanne joined the chorus of the Canadian Opera Company, where she also covered the role of Fourth Maid (Elektra). Upcoming engagements include: Contessa (Le nozze di Figaro) with Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.
