Phillip Addis

Daring, sensitive, versatile: thus is Phillip Addis. Singing with clarity and sincerity, he revels in storytelling, as he has done for twenty years, to audiences of all sizes, worldwide.

Operatically, Phillip is particularly known as an interpreter of Debussy’s Pelléas, in Pelléas et Mélisande, as well as the title roles in Billy Budd, Don Giovanni, Eugene Onegin, and Il Barbiere di Siviglia. Some of his most performed roles include Marcello in La Bohème, Il Conte di Almaviva in Le Nozze di Figaro, Papageno in Die Zauberflöte, and Escamillo in Carmen.  In total he has presented more than forty roles at more than forty opera companies.

Phillip’s concert repertoire ranges from baroque staples, such as Messiah, to newly commissioned premieres: most recently, Scott Good’s The Sleepers. Three works from his repertoire which most clearly showcase his extraordinary vocal range and emotional depth are Orff’s Carmina Burana, Mahler’s Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen, and Britten’s War Requiem.

In recital, Phillip has been most fortunate to create and perform many programmes over the years with pianist, Emily Hamper, his coach and wife. Together, they are also co-artistic directors of the Stratford Summer Music Vocal Academy.
